Large several acre woods and brush fire on US Hwy 1/Sugar Maple Dr
Just after 12:00 noon on 03/09/2017, Lemon Springs and Tramway Fire Departments responded to a brush fire along the side of the roadway on US Hwy 1 near Cedar Lane Rd and Sugar Maple Dr. Upon brush units 712 and 210 arriving on the scene it was found that the fire had spread from the northbound lanes of US Hwy 1 to the East crossing over Sugar Maple Dr and into the woods and towards Rocky Fork Church Rd. Mutual aid was requested to respond to assist. Mutual aid apparatus from Carolina Trace Fire Dept, Northwest Pocket Fire Dept and Cypress Point Fire Rescue Dept (Moore County) responded to assist. The North Carolina Forestry Service responded with Rangers and plows from Lee and Moore Counties along with a spotter plane and a helicopter to drop water on areas that were unreachable by ground crews. A total of 20 acres were destroyed from fire. Fortunately all residences in the area were spared from damage from fire.
